Client Comments

"Mary is a consummate teacher, a knowledgeable guide, and a generous soul."

"Wow! This class has opened up so much for me: the overall awareness of both my clients and myself. Mary is organized, concise and presented her material in a way that I can clearly understand. Thanks very much for a great overall experience."

"I'd like to thank the Rolf Institute for inviting Mary Bond to teach this class as I believe she embodies what "embodiment" is about. I like the way Mary taught with a specific goal in mind, but taught it holistically through engaging spirit and body."

"Mary excels when words are inadequate to convey the concept at hand. In these cases, she devises exercises whereby you come to define the concept through your own body. Her methods assure that learning continues long after the actual class."

"Mary Bond's depth of understanding of the human body is remarkable. What is even more outstanding is her dedication to finding the unique way to further each student's progress as a massage therapist and as a human being. She is one of those rare teachers who can engage with a diverse group and reach each person at the level of his or her own understanding."

Workshops for Everyone

Workshops for everyone While these classes are geared to the general public, they also offer valuable insights for fitness and bodywork professionals.

Core Support & Breathing
In this workshop we explore two common causes of poor posture: faulty breathing habits and poor abdominal support. We experience how healthy use of the abdominal muscles stabilizes the spine, preventing low back pain, and how abdominal exercise, done incorrectly, can worsen posture and interfere with breathing. We also feel how healthy breathing supports an open heart and how abdominal tone contains the body's center.

Healthy Walking
Walking incorrectly perpetuates poor posture with every step. In this workshop we examine our assumptions about walking and experiment with new ways of doing it. Step by step we discover that small adjustments to this basic movement yields big changes in how we feel. Balanced walking feels easier and smoother and may even eliminate foot, knee and back problems. It also transforms the attitudes with which we move about in the world.

The Magic of the Foot
In this workshop participants experience their feet as sensory organs and as foundation for the whole body. We explore foot problems such as bunions, "flat feet" and "high arches" from a holistic perspective. And we discover how the ability to derive a sense of support from the earth contributes to emotional grounding.

Posture and the Pelvis
In this workshop we explore the pelvis as the root of posture in sitting and as the key to fluid movement in walking. The class sheds light on back and hip problems by exploring the relationships between the spine, pelvis and legs. We also experience the sensations of grounding and centering that emerge through bringing awareness to the pelvis.

The Heart's Messengers: Shoulders, Arms and Hands
Habitual movements of the shoulders, arms and hands affect posture in surprising ways. In this workshop we learn the shoulders' role in supporting both hands and heart. We also explore the tactile sense and discover how the way we touch things affects both mind and body.

Platform for the Senses: Face, Head and Neck
In this workshop participants experience the surprising relationship between the senses and whole body balance. By learning to release misplaced tensions in the eyes, jaw and tongue, they discover themselves opening to new perceptions of their surroundings. We also address jaw tension and TMJ pain.

Sitting and Mousing
In this workshop we focus on physical and non-physical problems associated with sedentary work. Topics include sitting posture, proper chairs, shoulder and arm tension associated with keyboarding, and eye tension due to computer use. We also explore the way time pressure affects our bodies. The class includes unique stretches and movement breaks to do in the office.

Movement for Massage Therapists
This class presents principles of efficient body use for bodyworkers and massage therapists. Participants become aware of personal movement habits that cause pain and fatigue, and then learn alternative ways to work that are both more comfortable and more powerful. The class presents a unique perspective of body use that will serve you in areas of life outside the practice of massage.

Posture Analysis
This class presents the fundamentals of holistic visual assessment of body structure. It includes standing assessment, palpation skills and discussion of structural compensations for accidents, repetitive work and athletic activities. The class is also appropriate for yoga and fitness instructors and physical therapists.

Functional Analysis/Walking
This class explores the biomechanics of walking. Most people take walking for granted, never suspecting a causal relationship between their habitual walking movements and foot, knee, hip or back pain. By learning principles of correct walking and experiencing them in their own bodies, therapists will gain a powerful model for assessing clients' complaints. The workshop is also beneficial for yoga and fitness instructors and physical therapists.
